Kailua-Kona, The Big Island
The youngest island in the island chain is well noted for two of the most exotic symbols of paradise - volcanoes and orchids. The Hawaiian goddess of fire, Madame Pele, is associated with the Big Island and often makes her presence known with spectacular eruptions from Kilauea or Mauna Loa, the island’s two active volcanoes.

In contrast to the barren and rugged lava fields in the Kona and Volcano areas, other venues of the Big Island offer the world riches harvested from the ‘aina, the land. The world’s largest orchid growing business and the largest macadamia nut industry are found here. Exports of orchids and other tropical flowers, macadamia nuts and macadamia nut products, coffee, ginger, foliage, papayas and dryland taro send a little bit of Big Island aloha to all parts of the world.

Lifestyles on the Big Island offer a similar contrast, from the sunny resorts on the southwestern Kona coast, to country paniolo (cowboy) in Kohala or the hills of Waimea in the north, and to casual and friendly on the eastern side in Hilo or Pahoa. The only consistency throughout the island is the gentler pace of living, where golf and fishing are nearly everyone’s favorite pastimes, in a place where Mother Nature does not hold back on color, fragrance and splendor.
